MILKFED
THE PUNJAB STATE COOPERATIVE MILK PRODUCERS FEDERATION LIMITED:

The Punjab State Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited popularly known as MILKFED Punjab, cam into existence in 1973 with a twin objective. One, to carry activities for promoting production, procurement and processing of milk for the economic development of milk producers by providing remunerative milk market to them at their door step. Two, to provide quality milk and milk products to consumers at reasonable rates.

Although the federation was registered much earlier, but it came to real self in the year 1983 when all the milk plants of the erstwhile Punjab Dairy Development Corporation Limited were handed over to Cooperative sector and the entire State was covered under Operation Food programme to give the farmers a better deal and our valued customers better products. Today, when we look back, we have fulfilled the promise to great extent.

The setup of the organization is a three tier system, Milk Producers Cooperative Societies at the village level, Milk Unions at District Level and Milk Federation as an Apex Body at State level.

MILK PROCUREMENT NETWORK:
Working on “Anand Pattern” the process of organizing societies at village level started in Punjab as early as 1978. Presently, there is strong Network of about 6474 (as on 31.3.2010) Milk Producers Cooperative Societies organized at village level. About 3.65 Lakh milk producer members are attached to these societies. Fresh milk is procured from the milk producers twice a day through village level societies directly without the assistance of any middleman.

EXPANSION OF FROZEN SEMEN STATION:

Milkfed is having one of the most modern Frozen Semen Station at Bhattian(Khanna). This station has been awarded Grade "A" by Govt. of India's special Technical Evaluation Team. The capacity of this Station has been expanded from 5 Lac doses to 10 Lac doses per annum with the financial assistance under National Project on Cattle and Buffalo breeding(NPCBB) Scheme of Govt. of India.

COMMUNITY BASED SILAGE MAKING IN KANDI AREAS

Milkfed initiated community based silage making to fulfill shortage of green fodder in Kandi areas of Hoshiarpur & Gurdaspur. This will ensure availability of green fodder in the shape of Silage during scarcity period. This will help in improving milk production. 50 Silo pits of capacity 150 M.T. each have been constructed in Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur.

FODDER SEED MULTIPLICATION PROGRAMME:

Non availability of quality fodder seed was a major constraint. Milkfed has established its own automatic fodder seed production & processing unit at Bassi Pathana.  During the year 2008-09, Milkfed produced 8015 quintals of quality fodder seed and out of which 3450 Qtls. was sold to Govt. of India for Minikits.

PROVIDING MILKING MACHINES/MILKING PARLOURS:

To upgrade milking technology, Milkfed is providing milking machines/milking parlours to dairy cooperative societies/progressive dairy farmers at 50%/25% subsidy. Till date 646 Milking Machines and 1 Milking Parlour have been provided. This will improve Bacteriological quality of milk by reduction in somatic cells and thereby reducing the cases of mastitis.

SETTING UP OF BY-PASS PROTEIN PLANT:

To increase Milk Production and daily income of dairy farmers, Milkfed has established a  By-Pass Protein Plant of capacity 50 M.T. per day at cattlefeed plant Khanna under RKVY scheme. This will provide cheaper source of proteins, essential amino acids and improve reproductive efficiency of milch animals.

EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN THROUGH COOPERATIVES:

Milkfed realised that women participation in Dairy Cooperatives can help rural women in becoming self confidant, self reliant and can run Dairy Cooperatives more efficiently.
